The Popa Mountain – The Oasis in Bagan

Mount Popa is the mouth of a volcano that was extinct 2,500 years ago, an oasis in the center of dry land about 50 km south-east of Bangan. Popa Mountain rises 1,520 meters, atop the most sacred temple of Taung Kalat in Myanmar. This place is considered as the legendary house of “NAT” or “soul”. Burmese believe that the volcano is the home of the supreme deity Nat and the temple is often associated with the summit of Olympus in their home country.

At the foot of the mountain there are many monkeys, they gather to ask for food from tourists. The monkeys are very brave, they seem close to the locals.

The top of the mountain is very steep, people make the way with steep stairs and strong handrails with roofs covering the whole length of the steps. If we want to reach the top, we must overcome 777 steps.

You must try to overcome the challenge, go through the steep stairs, because local people say that who climbs to the top will absorb the essence of heaven and earth, the body will be healthy and strong.

And strangely, when it comes to the top, the black clouds drift away, the sky is clear with the bright sun.

The sacred golden Taung Kalat temple of Burmese glows in the afternoon sun.Sometimes a cloud flies over, the scene is like a fairy tale. Actually, the feeling of fatigue disappears when standing on top of Popa watching the scenery around. Clouds cluttered out, creating a fanciful scene. In the nice days, the scene will look a lot better but surely that will make you happy, to a place that is considered the holiest in Myanmar.
