Things to Know when Traveling to Sapa

Eating

Sa Pa is famous for “lợn cắp nách” (pork of small pigs which can be carried under people’s arm) and medlar (apple) wine, which  give visitors unforgettable experiences. In addition, although Sa Pa is a mountainous district, there are specialties from fish. Sa Pa stream fish is usually about the size of fingers, and is fried to make crispy dish. Especially, Sa Pa people can feed salmon and sturgeon. These two varieties of cold water fish have firm meat without fat. The fish can be cooked as sour bamboo shoots hotpot or used to make fish salad and served with raw vegetables, ginger and dipped in mustard.

Arriving to Sa Pa, visitors should try the famous and characteristic dish of “thắng cố”. This is a traditional feature of the H’mong people. Traditionally, the ingredients of this dish include horse meat and organs.

A delicious pot of thắng cố needs nearly 30 different kinds of spices such as cinnamon, anise, cardamom, fragrant leaves…  Forest vegetables are the second most important part of this unique dish. The dish has special taste such as sweet, fat, fragrant. Nothing seems to be more interesting than sitting on the side of the boiling thắng cố pan, eating the soup and sipping a cup of corn wine. Them, visitors will feel warm in the cold air, mountain breeze.

In addition to a number of familiar dining venues in the town, guests can visit Gat Gu hot pot restaurant at 56 Thach Son street. This restaurant is full of famous traditional dishes of Sa Pa with very specific flavor, reasonable price, nice and cozy restaurant space.

Shopping

Sa Pa is a place where there are many specialties bearing the nature of the Northwest forest, suitable for tourists to buy as gifts or use in the family such as: mint honey, salmon trout, medlar jelly, Salmon, fresh sturgeon, buffalo meat…. Bac Ha rice, Dao’s medicine to put in bath tub, artichoke, kinds of oils, Brocade, H’Mong wine… are also specialties that tourists should buy as gifts.

Visitors can shop at Sapa central market, areas around  Cat Cat village, Cau May street, Stone church … A unique place that visitors can not ignore is North West specialty supermarket located opposite to Sa Pa new market. This supermarket is full of typical North West items. Supermarket goods are clean products of provenance, quality assured, packaged carefully, and clearly priced.
