Coming to the north of Laos, you will surely have a vastly different experience. Those experiences will motivate you to step out of yourself and see a different, unique, and exotic Laos. Moreover, some destinations possess an unmatched beauty of the world. Let’s travel with me to explore them.
1. Houay Xai
Houay Xai is the first destination of exploring northern Laos. It is a small town on the banks of the Mekong and the other side is Chiang Khong, Thailand. Here, you will see the boats packed with locals and tourists running slowly on the river. Turn your back, you will see the mountains, the hill with an attractive, enticing you to take a strong step. Do not hesitate to enjoy sceneries here to make yourselves more relaxed.
2, Gibbon Experience Trip
In Houay Xai, you will find the headquarters to sign up for the Gibbon Experience to learn the wildest and most unique wildlife in Southeast Asia. The Gibbon Experience is located in the Bokeo Nature Reserve, a forest with a total area of 123,000 hectares, which is one of the most remote parts of Laos. The project, conducted by the Lammet and Hmong ethnic groups, will provide visitors with an opportunity to better understand their unique cultural life and intimate relationship with the forest.
3, Luang Nam Tha
You will have to experience a hard day although you just sit on the bus to go through the jungle of the Nam Ha Biodiversity Zone. However, it is still extremely a wonderful day. Walking through the cramped and dusty roads to reach the small town located in the northwest – Luang Nam Tha. Located in the valley of the Nam Tham River and surrounded by rice fields and a series of majestic hills, Luang Nam Tha is gradually growing to become an ecotourism center and an unforgettable destination for outdoor activities.
When coming to Oudomxay, visitors may feel shocked at the first sight because it is not like other tourist destinations. Oudomxay is like a dusty highway stop with some old buildings in the middle of a valley and destroyed woods. Although not as glamorous as Luang Phabang and Luang Nam Tha, Oudomxay town can still provide a unique and interesting travel experience of culture and life here for visitors. From Oudomxay, you can prepare a visit to the Khmu village in the La Plateau region and experience the unique culture of the indigenous people.
5, “Heart” of Laos
Your visit to the Khmu village begins early in the morning and you will meet a local guide and take the highway to La district, one of the poorest provinces in Laos. After more than two hours crossing the stream on the only way to enter the village, you will see the simple and serene things. It seems as if they are the last two adjectives to describe your feelings as you step over the last few hundred meters on the path leading to a wilderness village close to nature. In the evening, you will enjoy a delicious meal with the village headman and his family. Simple food like chicken and soup made from wild vegetables will be served for you to enjoy. Besides, a little glutinous rice placed on a lacquer on the floor might attract you. Finally, coming to the village, being treated like a guest makes you feel alive in the community. And then, when you leave the village, you will feel a part of your heart still left in the beautiful valley with those friendly people.
After visiting the village of Khmu, you can return to Oudomxay Town to catch a bus to Luang Prabang or continue your journey on the road leading to Phongsali District. Phongsali is not nicer or more interesting than Oudomxay, but the main thing that brings you here is the experience on the Nam Ou River to Muang Ngoi Neua. This 7 to 10-hour journey will allow you to admire the endless beauty of one of the most beautiful rivers in Laos.
7, Muang Ngoi Neua
When leaving the boat along Nam Ou River and coming to Muang Ngoi Neua, you will admire a green space, peaceful that it cannot be more seductive. With a range of romantic mountains along with many hotels or eateries, local people have turned this place into a great vacation after a tired boat trip.
8, Luang Prabang
This is the ultimate destination for exploring northern Laos. This beautiful city is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Luang Prabang has beautiful green streets with French-style buildings built during the colonial period. You might set foot on the last destination to have many memories in your journey to the North of Laos.
